so on Feb 29th Facebook announced ‘some’ changes are coming for Fanpages, they will come in to effect on March 30th, and you need to get the changes made by that date or you may potentially lose your fanpage!

I say ‘some’ changes, it’s actually some BIG changes, here’s a quick summary: -

1: Default Landing Tabs:

The old tabs are going and the new tabs will be 810 pixels Wide, so you can no longer create a default landing tab, although you can still create a “fan gate”

2: Photos, Likes, and Apps at the Top of the Page:

Photos will appear as the first spot, but you will be able to change the order of the others to prioritize what is best for your visitors to see.

You can also display a max of 12 apps, so choose carefully and get the best in early.

3: Pinning Favorite Updates:

You will be able to pin a update to the top by hovering over the post and clicking on the pencil.

You can also make it wide by clicking on the star icon.

4: New Admin Panel:

The admin panel is going to give more info about both your activity and that of your fans ['insights'], it’s all in the activity log.

5: New Admin Levels:

You will also be able to set different permissions for different ‘level’ admins, giving a lot more control over what people can do.

6:  Fan Page Messages:

Your pages fans will now be able to contact you privately using messages, the notifications for new messages will appear in your admin panel.

7: Cover Photo:

The cover photo is obviously a LOT wider, up to 850px by 315pixels.

IMPORTANT: the cover photo MUST NOT contain any of the following: -

a. Price, purchase info, incentive offers, or blatant a “call to action”, e.g. as “33% off”, “Free Download”, “Tell your friends” etc.

b. Your contact details, e.g. website URL, email address, telephone number, mailing address or other info. that should be in your page’s ‘About’ section.

c. Specific references to fanpage user interface elements, e.g. as Like or Share.

Have you got your Fanpage URL yet?

Facebook is quite obviously one of the very biggest sites on the internet and is likely to be so for some time to come, but are you taking advantage of their “authority” yet?

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, for a website or page can be broken down in to two basic and distinct categories or “tasks”.

The Basics of SEO are: -

1. On Page SEO
2. Off Page SEO

Note: Underpinning both of these is the keyword research for a site, which should in fact be the first part of any good SEO campaign.
Good keyword research is essential and this will be covered in separate posts & videos.

On Page SEO

On page Optimization includes things like how often a specific keyword or phrase appears on the page, where it appears, and which “tags” it appears in, such as “H1″ (Header) tags in the html formating, as well as the Title and Description Meta Tags.

It also includes the use of the keywords in the naming of the webpage or blog post.

The internal linking structure of your website, i.e. links between pages within your own site, are also effectively “on page factors” for SEO.

Off Page SEO

Off Page Optimization is down to the number of links to your webpage from other websites, the keywords used in the hyperlink description, and the “authority” of those sites in the eyes of the search engines.

On Page SEO v Off Page SEO

Now here’s the important bit, no matter what the search engine “representatives” would have you believe, off page seo factors are FAR more important to where your web pages rank in the SERP’s (Search Engine Results Pages) than ANY on page seo factors.

There is a classic example that has been used by many SEO experts to illustrate this – the Adobe Reader website (get.adobe.com/reader/), which ranks 1st in Google for the search term “click here”.

Note: it doesn’t matter whether you put click here in “‘s or not.

If you take a look in google.com you will find that there are over 1 Billion results for the keyphrase “click here”.

Adobe haven’t done any optimization for the key phrase, and if you check the page you will find that the phrase “click here” doesn’t even appear anywhere on the page…

or in the html for the page, so it’s not in the title, description or keywords meta tags either.

so why does http://get.adobe.com/reader/ rank 1st in Google for the phrase “click here”?

simple, there are thousands of other sites that link to this page with a phrase something along the lines of “Click Here to download Adobe Reader”, and the majority have the words “click here” as the hyperlinked text.

What does this mean in SEO terms?

Any SEO work you do should be focused primarily on the Off Page factors, as these will have the biggest effect on your page rankings.

This doesn’t mean ignoring on page optimization, this should still be a part of the overall SEO strategy for your website.

If your site and a competitor’s are closely matched on the number and/or quality of backlinks you have, then the on page factors can be the “edge” you need to nudge your page ahead of theirs in the SERP’s.

Fortunately the on page optimization tends to be pretty quick and simple, and a “one off” task (apart from occasional tweaking for testing), so although “On Page” optimization is not as important, it should not be ignored.

The higher your site appears in the search engine results for your chosen keyword or phrase the easier it is for people to find your website, and therefore the more free targeted prospect youwill have visiting your site.

The vast majority of people who use search engines only ever click on the links for sites listed on the first page of results for their search, in fact the majority of clicks go to just the top 3-4 sites, so the best results are attained from getting your site in to the top few entries on the first page of results for your chosen keyphrase.

How to Optimise your site?

There are a number of different “on page” (e.g. keyword density) and “off page” (e.g. backlinks) factors to getting your site a high position in the search engines, and many, many books and courses have been written about the best way to achieve it.

The truth is that there is no one gauranteed way, as the search engines are constantly changing the criteria that they use for deciding on a websites “rank”, and each of the search engines has a different set of rules that they apply.

There are however some basic steps and guidlines that you can follow to make sure you have the best chance possible fo getting a good rank in the main search engines, and I will be covering the ones that work in upcoming posts, to help you achieve the results you want and need.

OK, let’s kick off with a simple question -

“What are Search Engine Optimization Services?”

Nowadays every business realises that they could benefit from a web site, but most businesses don’t realise that just putting up a “Business Card” style website on the internet is unlikely to actually bring them many, if any, customers.
